Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at the nano scale, at
dimensions between approximately 1 and 100 nanometers, where unique
phenomena enable novel applications.(http://www.nano.gov/)It also allows scientists to create, explore, and manipulate materials measured
in nanometers (billionths of a meter). Such materials can have
chemical, physical, and biological properties that differ from those of
their larger counterparts.
There are tons of beneficiaries of nanotechnology and equally their are tons of dangerous effects. In Europe they establish a commission concerning the health of individuals in relation with the new advancements of the economy (see http://ec.europa.eu/health/opinions2/en/nanotechnologies/about-nanotechnologies.htm#7) especially in nanotechnology. If nanotechnology is implemented we will have advancement in medicine, environment, energy, information and communication and so on and so forth in the least expensive way.
In the human concept of nanotechnology we perceive this term as a device or a micro device that is able to do micro related activities. Just like drugs delivery in the human system to target and cure tumors in cells and avoiding the unaffected cells. Even in the environment filtration will be easy compared today, fumigation, cleansing and others at a very low cost. Though this is advantageous to the society, nanotechnology also has its setbacks, like Nano-toxicity and nano-pollution which is in fact dangerous not only for the human body but also the environment.
Todays manufacturing methods are very crude at the molecular level. Casting,
grinding, milling and even lithography move atoms in great thundering statistical
herds.
It's like
trying to make things out of LEGO blocks with boxing gloves on your hands. Yes,
you can push the LEGO blocks into great heaps and pile them up, but you can't
really snap them together the way you'd like. In this concept we can see that we can assemble or change the atoms of matter creating new forms of matter in the process.

This new discoveries may lead to man's greatest achievement in advancing the economy to its peak, or maybe a greater demise for the people who lives, breathes and drinks different forms of matter but are infested with this nanotechnology leading to total control of humanity or to the extent of extinction of human beings as we speak. Remember that in every action there is an equal reaction, we may reach the peak of advancement but will also lead to the downfall of our humanity.
